What can I say? This is pretty much the game that started the whole ball rolling - sure, you had Pong and Pac-Man and Asteroids, but a plumber rescuing a princess was a huge step. It's a bit simple and the controls are less than optimal by today's standards, but it's a classic, and a good one at that.

Without this game who knows what games would look like now. The only company you can thank is the one time card company, Nintendo. 'Nuff said.

The Timeless Classic Platformer

Revisiting Super Mario Bros. on the NES is like stepping back into a childhood memory, one that’s just as fun and surprisingly challenging as it was decades ago. I have speedran this game in the past, but this time around, I played it in a way I never imagined back then, on a Steam Deck, using RetroArch with RetroAchievements enabled. I was genuinely surprised by how well the game played on the Steam Deck using RetroArch, input latency was remarkably low, which I could never achieve on a PC or on a modern TV. And with all 77 achievements unlocked over 25 hours, this legendary game felt new, challenging, and rewarding.

Let’s be honest — most of us have played Super Mario Bros. before. Whether it was on the original NES, a re-release like Super Mario All-Stars, on the newer NES …

Super Mario Bros. is fun, fast paced, and the start of something special for Nintendo. You have to give the game that set the standard for the 2D action platform genre some props.

I love the creativity of the environment. Mushrooms to make you bigger, hurling fireballs, stomping unusual bad guys. Warping, breaking blocks, hard jumps, hammer bros., dumping Bowser into lava, it's all great. Trying to save a princess is a noble cause. It's too bad that gosh darn Toad kept getting in the way.

I use to be able to beat the game in under six minutes. I still think I can do it in under ten. A fantastic, historical game that all video game nuts need to play at some point.
